Intelligent microscopy from sample to result

Minimic is an automated, intelligent, and trainable microscope. Integrated deep learning image processing guarantees a seamless workflow from sample to the analysis result. Minimic saves time and resources in routine imaging tasks and lets you focus on the exciting questions.

Initial situation and challenge

- Traditional microscopes are often heavy, expensive, and require a high level of manual operating skills. They are not very efficient for routine tasks, such as malaria-related blood count analyses.

- Many laboratories around the world spend a considerable amount of time counting cells, examining samples, etc., which is not only time-consuming but also heavily dependent on the skills of the person performing the task.

- The goal was to develop a device that enables a continuous, automated workflow “from sample to analysis result,” which also supports less experienced users, reduces errors, and speeds up workflows.

Responsibilities

Designing the user interface for users with experience in microscopy (e.g., simple sample handling, intuitive controls, visual feedback). Ensuring that the interface presents the AI results in an understandable way and that the user can easily recognize what is being done (e.g., counting, detection).

In addition to UI & UX design, I was also responsible for the branding of Minimic. I developed a visual identity that highlights the project’s innovative spirit while conveying trust, precision, and user-friendliness. The branding created a clear recognition value and helped position Minimic.

Working on Minimic was a truly valuable learning experience for me. The close connection between design, technology, and science demonstrated how strongly good design can influence everyday laboratory work. Along the way, I gained deep insights into iterative development, user feedback, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

My sincere thanks go to the Intuity team and all project partners – it was a great privilege to be part of this project and to contribute together to advancing research and medical practice.
