In a world where the population is constantly growing and resources are becoming increasingly scarce, we are faced with the challenge of finding innovative solutions for food production. Space on earth is becoming increasingly scarce and traditional agricultural methods are reaching their limits. It is therefore time to break new ground and develop alternative approaches to meet the growing demand for food in a sustainable way.

New protein sources

Mealworm protein has proven to be a promising and sustainable source of protein. Not only is it rich in essential nutrients, it is also extremely resource-efficient and environmentally friendly to produce. Mealworms can be bred in vertical farms and require less water, land and feed compared to conventional livestock farming. Their rapid growth and high reproduction rate make them an ideal source of protein for the future.

ECDYSIS REPLICA is a concept for a cycle-oriented and automated insect farm. An idea that brings a vision into a visual language to be discussed. This speculative design approach raises the question of how far we can go in combining industrialized automation and the lives of animals to create a better future for us humans.

I have gained experience through self-experimentation and breeding my own mealworms.

The Idee will use state-of-the-art robotic equipment and artificial intelligence technologies to automate the production.

By 2050, we will have to increase global food production by more than 70 % to meet the needs of the world's population.

And that's with only 5% more agricultural land.

The design creates a optimised system for automation, while also reducing the amount of space.

Process

- Making Of

From the very beginning, my aim was to give "Ecdysis Replica" a distinctive style and visual language. Design research, references from all areas and inspiration from other eras help me to develop a clear yet surprising brand.

Process

- Branding

The combination of industrial technology, natural brown tones, process infographics and a nod to the era of Egyptian wall paintings creates a unique brand.

The sustainable protein source of the future

Special Thanks

Thanks to my friends and family for discussing the inclusion of insects in daily meals. To everyone who listened to me enthusiastically and didn't think I was crazy for breeding thousands of mealworms in my living room.
